This quirky dark comedy begins with Jenni talking to the plants she tends to at her crappy job in a garden centre. After a series of unlikely and unfortunate events, including the death of her beloved turtle, she returns home to find her valley girl housemate has inexplicably kicked her out.
Broken Gardenias is a fun film, even if at times it’s a little problematic. There’s a real joie de vivre about the movie, with the movie keen to show that genderqueer people living outside the mainstream are still good, worthwhile and interesting, and that those who many shy away from because they’re ‘weird’ often have hidden depths.
Cool, darkly funny and always surprising, Broken Gardenias is a touching comedy-drama about two very different girls who embark on a journey of self-discovery and blossoming love through the heartland of America. Jenni, uber-nerd and something of a savant, is having a tough time.

I recently caught the screenings of Broken Gardenias at the Los Angeles Women's Film Festival and the Independent Filmmakers Showcase in Los Angeles. Being I understood the vision and direction of the film after two viewings versus having "walked out at the 3/4 mark or so", my review is in sharp contrast to the previous two I've read on here.
